His Story
My father was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts and, somewhere along the way, he found himself in Newburyport where he graduated from NHS in 1941.
In the early 1940's my father was a left-handed pitcher for the Newbury Shamrocks baseball team. His proud moment that he loved to share was the time that he hit a home run oven the pond at the Green in Newbury.
Before marrying my mother Virginia Josephine (Roger) Riley in 1946, he lived at the local YMCA for a while with other residences including State & Washington streets.
From what I understand, after leaving the Army Air Corps, my family was one of the first to live in what was, at the time, called "The Projects" in the Northend of town.
Some of his jobs were at the Hytron, Boston Navy Yard, Portsmouth Navy Yard, and the Portsmouth Air Base all as a civilian.
In the early 1960's he family purchased our forever home at 30 Temple Street where he lived until his death in 2002.
At one time, I was able to verify some of this from the Newburyport Daily News archives which I can't seem to locate online any longer.
His Newbury Shamrocks uniform
As you can see, it's quite filthy from sitting in a workshop with a lot of smokers around.
